The Debian Project, which writes the operating system that drives
Techahedron's servers, today released the long-awaited fourth iteration
of Debian - Etch. Debian is the second oldest distribution of Linux,
and has a reputation for Enterprise-class stability and security, an excellent package management system and
strong ties to the open source community.
With this update, Debian offers an unprecedented number of applications
in one product, culminating in the largest single collaborative
software project ever created. It offers the latest versions of key
software for the Web
2.0 platform including Apache 2.2, PHP 5 and MySql 5. Due to these
enhancements, the functionality provided by Debian powered servers will
be greatly
improved. The Debian Project recommends all administrators to migrate
to the latest version of the operating system to utilise these new
applications.
The Techahedron servers have been running Debian 3.1, since they were
first
installed. Debian is one of the most admired Linux distributions and
thanks to the GPL has been the inspiration for several other derived
works that have been based around it's core code. Most notably Ubuntu,
which is fast becoming the most popular Linux
distribution, particularly on the desktop. Over the next couple of
months, Techahedron will be running reliability and compatibility tests
to ensure that all software running in the data centre is stable on the
new platform. Following the successful completion of these tests, a migration strategy will be provided to all our
clients, and the servers will be upgraded.
